Shift Manager - Operations Planner
Role Purpose
The Planner prepares, executes and monitors the safe and effective planning for loading and discharging containerized shipping vessels.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare the required documents for loading or discharge of containers to or from vessels.
- Monitors vessel operations to ensure they are being carried out efficiently, accurately and safely.
- Plan, coordinate and evaluate the day-to-day labour (ILWU foremen and labour) and equipment requirements to ensure operations are cost effective.
- Identify successes and variances and give advice or opinion as to how to deal with issues.
- Liaise with yard, gate and rail operations to ensure maximum utilization and optimal efficiency of container yard.
- Liaise with vessel planners, yard planner, agents, port captains, ship officers or crew as required.
- Prepare directly vessel performance summaries to customers, billing and operations department.
Knowledge & Qualifications
- 3 years of experience in logistics or a similar field.
- A degree in business, logistics or similar field is preferred.
- A positive, hands-on approach and the ability to work as a team member.
- Excellent people management skills with well-formed motivational skills, including solid negotiation, influencing, change management and labour relations skills.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and maintain good working relationships and achieve buy in and ownership to quality standards/ initiatives with all departments and levels.
- Sound judgement and analytical thinking that enables decision making, ability to manage projects and prioritize and manage timelines.
- Comprehensive understanding of ship loading operations, vessel construction, cargo stowage, cargo securing and applicable regulations.
- Solid computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office and the proven ability to learn new systems quickly.
- Flexibility to meet the requirements of a 24/7 operation.
- Fluent in English.
- Previous Canadian work experience or experience working directly with Canadian industries.
