Summary
The SMT
Equipment Maintenance Engineer is responsible for the maintenance,
troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of Surface Mount Technology (SMT)
production equipment to ensure maximum uptime, quality, and efficiency in an
EMS manufacturing environment.
Key
Responsibilities
Equipment
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective
maintenance of SMT machines such as:
- Pick & Place machines
(e.g., Fuji, Panasonic, ASM, Yamaha)
- Solder Paste Printers
(e.g., DEK, MPM)
- Reflow Ovens (e.g.,
Heller, Vitronics)
- SPI (Solder Paste
Inspection) & AOI systems
- Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical,
pneumatic, and software-related issues.
Line
Support & Uptime Improvement
- Provide real-time technical support to SMT
production lines.
- Minimize downtime and ensure quick machine
recovery.
- Maintain MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) and
MTTR (Mean Time To Repair) targets.
Preventive
Maintenance Planning
- Develop and execute preventive maintenance
schedules.
- Maintain maintenance records and logs.
- Ensure calibration of critical equipment.
Installation
& Commissioning
- Support installation, setup, and qualification
of new SMT equipment.
- Coordinate with vendors during machine
installation and upgrades.
Process
& Equipment Optimization
- Analyze recurring issues and implement
corrective actions.
- Suggest improvements for machine efficiency
and yield enhancement.
- Participate in continuous improvement
initiatives (Lean, Six Sigma).
Spare
Parts & Inventory Management
- Manage critical spare parts inventory.
- Coordinate with procurement for timely
availability of parts.
- Optimize inventory to reduce costs without
affecting uptime.
Documentation
& Compliance
- Maintain SOPs, work instructions, and
maintenance checklists.
- Ensure compliance with ESD, safety, and
quality standards (ISO, IPC).
Training
& Skill Development
- Train technicians and operators on equipment
handling and basic troubleshooting.
- Upgrade skills based on new technologies and
equipment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree / Diploma in: Electronics Engineering /
Electrical Engineering / Mechatronics or related field
Experience
- 3–8 years of experience in SMT equipment
maintenance in an EMS environment.
- Hands-on experience with major SMT machine
brands.
Technical
Skills
- Strong knowledge of SMT processes and equipment.
- Ability to read electrical schematics and
mechanical drawings.
- Experience with PLCs, sensors, servo systems,
and vision systems.
- Familiarity with IPC standards (e.g.,
IPC-A-610).
