Software Development Engineer III – Test Infrastructure
Level: SDE III (Individual Contributor)
Department: Quality Engineering
Location: Mountain View, CA (Onsite)
Position Overview
As a Software Development Engineer III on the Quality Engineering team, you will build and maintain automation frameworks and testing infrastructure that give ID.me engineering teams the confidence to ship quickly and safely. You'll build tooling for functional, end-to-end, and security-focused test automation, help extend testing coverage into production through canary releases and progressive delivery, and apply AI-assisted testing practices as part of the team's broader adoption. This includes building test coverage for consumer-facing commerce and marketplace experiences (offers, cashback, affiliate/attribution flows) alongside core platform and identity services. You'll work closely with engineering, product, and security teams to raise the bar on quality and resilience across a platform that verifies the identity of millions of users and the commerce experiences built on top of it.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and maintain automation frameworks (Playwright, Python, Jest, API automation) that provide comprehensive, reliable test coverage across ID.me's services.
- Develop end-to-end and integration tests for complex, asynchronous, event-driven, and eventually-consistent systems, including workflow orchestration platforms such as Temporal.
- Support testing-in-production practices, including canary deployments, progressive/phased rollouts, synthetic monitoring, and automated rollback triggers, to help validate real-world behavior safely before full release.
- Build and maintain test automation for commerce and marketplace surfaces, such as offers, cashback, affiliate/attribution and click-tracking accuracy, consent gates, and persona-based experiences (e.g., logged-in/out, member-group-specific offers), including client-side surfaces like browser extensions.
- Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions), contributing to reusable/shared workflow components that other service teams can adopt.
- Use AI tools to accelerate test authoring, test plan generation, and code review.
- Collaborate with development teams on testable code structure, coverage gaps, and quality checks throughout the development lifecycle.
- Debug and root-cause issues across frontend, backend, APIs, and distributed services, and drive fixes to closure.
- Help define and track reliability metrics (e.g., time to detect, time to remediate) for the systems you test.
Minimum Qualifications
- 4+ years of experience (or equivalent: 2+ years with a Master's degree) as a software engineer in modern web applications and distributed systems.
- Proficiency in Python/TypeScript/JavaScript/Java
- Hands-on experience with Playwright, Jest, and API automation.
- Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, ArgoCD).
- Experience testing e-commerce/marketplace experiences, including offers and cashback logic, affiliate/attribution and click-tracking accuracy, consent-gate and error-state flows, and persona- or member-group-based test coverage (e.g., logged-in/out, cashback vs. community offers).
Preferred Qualifications
- Browser & Client-Side Testing: Experience building E2E test frameworks for browser extensions or other client-side commerce surfaces from scratch (page objects, extension-context fixtures, network/HAR-replay stubbing for anti-bot sites, cross-browser dispatch)
- API & Systems Testing: REST APIs, microservices, distributed and event-driven architectures; workflow orchestration (e.g., Temporal)
- Testing Strategy & Ops: Canary/phased rollouts, automated rollback, contract testing (Pact), performance/load testing (Locust, k6, Gatling); exposure to failure-triage or flaky-test classification approaches that reduce manual CI triage
- Engineering & Platform: Java/Spring Boot or Ruby on Rails; GCP, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform/Helm, Vault-based secrets management; observability and chaos engineering
- Identity & Security (nice to have): OAuth 2.0/OIDC, RBAC/ReBAC, secrets management, tenant isolation, IDV/KYC and PII/compliance validation
- AI-Augmented Testing: Using agentic tools for test generation, code review, and test planning
- Debugging: Strong root cause analysis across frontend, backend, APIs, and distributed services
