We're looking for an experienced, approachable engineering leader who enjoys bringing out the best in people, developing technical capability and helping teams solve complex problems.

Our core technology stack and high-level architectural direction are defined, and we're in the early stages of bringing that vision to life. Your opportunity is to work alongside the team to guide technical design and implementation decisions, strengthen engineering practices, support ongoing platform modernisation and help our people grow their careers.

Based in Christchurch, you'll work closely with our Senior Product Manager, Technical Product Owner and CIO, combining people leadership with practical technical guidance in an environment where software quality, security and reliability really matter.

Role Purpose

As Software Development Manager at MediMap, you'll lead a small team of Software Engineers and Test Engineers, with a primary focus on people leadership, engineering capability and technical excellence. You'll provide mentoring, architectural guidance and practical support to help the team navigate technical challenges, improve software quality and continuously evolve our established platform.

Working closely with the Senior Product Manager, Technical Product Owner, CIO and external technology partners, you'll help translate product needs into practical technical solutions, manage engineering risks and dependencies, and support the reliability, security and continuous improvement of our technology environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • People Leadership & Development – Lead, coach and mentor Software Engineers and Test Engineers, supporting career development, technical growth, individual performance and a collaborative, empowered team culture.

  • Engineering Priorities & Dependencies – Identify and manage technical dependencies, engineering risks, technical debt and platform improvement opportunities, working with Product to balance immediate needs with long-term technical health.
  • Software Quality & Engineering Practices – Champion code quality, testing, CI/CD, secure development, observability and continuous improvement to support reliable, sustainable software delivery.
  • Product & Technology Collaboration – Work closely with the Senior Product Manager and Technical Product Owner to understand product objectives, assess technical feasibility, communicate trade-offs and support effective engineering outcomes.
  • Platform Operations & Security – Collaborate with the CIO and external platform, infrastructure and cybersecurity vendors to address operational requirements, resolve technical challenges and support project-specific infrastructure and security needs.
  • AI & Emerging Engineering Practices – Guide the team in adopting AI-assisted development tools pragmatically, improving productivity and quality while maintaining appropriate engineering judgement, security and accountability. Contribute to the development and implementation of organisational AI governance and policies.
