Software Engineer (Backend | Python | FastAPI)

Our client is a leading public sector organisation driving large-scale digital platforms supporting research, data and innovation. As they continue to expand their engineering capabilities, they are looking for a Software Engineer to build modern backend platforms powering cutting-edge research initiatives.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design, build and maintain scalable backend services and RESTful APIs using Python (FastAPI).
  • Build scalable data ingestion pipelines for structured and unstructured datasets.
  • Develop secure, containerised microservices and contribute to a reliable, cloud-ready platform architecture.
  • Collaborate closely with researchers, bioinformaticians and cross-functional teams to translate research needs into robust technical solutions.
  • Contribute to code quality through automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, code reviews and technical documentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent software engineering experience.
  • Experience in software development with strong proficiency in Python (experience with Node.js is also welcomed).
  • Experience developing RESTful APIs, backend services or microservices using frameworks such as FastAPI or Express.
  • Hands-on experience with relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL) and familiarity with object storage technologies (e.g. Amazon S3).
  • Exposure to Docker, Kubernetes, React, cloud-native development or CI/CD practices would be an advantage.
