Software Engineer - Embedded Systems & Communication

Summary

Develop embedded Linux and SoC-based communication software for sensor systems, integrating protocols like TCP/IP and CAN bus across naval and commercial monitoring solutions.

Software Engineer - Embedded Systems & Communication

Kongsberg Discovery is growing, and we want you to be part of our journey. Join our Software Development team and contribute to the development of advanced monitoring and sensing solutions for commercial and naval applications. Our product portfolio includes subsea leak detection systems, condition monitoring systems for rotating machinery, and acoustic monitoring solutions supporting naval operations worldwide.

The Software Engineer – Embedded Systems & Communication will be responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of software solutions enabling communication, integration, and operation of advanced sensor and monitoring systems.

The role combines communication software development with embedded Linux and System-on-Chip (SoC) platforms, ensuring reliable data exchange between sensors, embedded devices, user applications, and external systems. The position involves development of communication services, application infrastructure, software deployment mechanisms, and low-level system integration for distributed monitoring solutions serving commercial and naval applications.

The successful candidate will work closely with software, signal processing, FPGA, hardware, and systems engineers to develop robust, maintainable, and scalable software solutions. The role requires hands‑on software development as well as participation in system architecture, integration, troubleshooting, and technical decision‑making across the software stack.

What you will be doing

  • Develop and maintain communication software components for embedded and distributed sensor systems
  • Implement and support communication protocols and interfaces, including TCP/IP, CAN bus, Modbus, and IWIS
  • Develop software for embedded Linux and SoC‑based platforms, including FPGA + Arm architectures, system startup, application management, and software deployment
  • Support firmware, bootloader, and kernel integration activities for embedded devices
  • Integrate software with hardware platforms and communication interfaces such as SPI, I²C, UART, CAN, USB, Ethernet, and PCIe
  • Troubleshoot and resolve communication, software, and system integration issues using modern debugging and diagnostic tools
  • Contribute to communication architecture, system design, documentation, verification, and technical reviews
  • Collaborate with software, hardware, FPGA, and systems engineers to ensure reliable end‑to‑end system performance

We think you should have

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Embedded Systems, Electronics, or a related field
  • Solid experience with software development using C/C++, C#, .NET, Python, or similar technologies
  • Experience with communication protocols and interfaces such as TCP/IP, CAN bus, Modbus, and IWIS
  • Experience working with embedded Linux systems and embedded software development, including familiarity with firmware, bootloaders, Linux kernel concepts, and device integration
  • Knowledge of System-on-Chip (SoC) platforms, particularly FPGA + Arm-based architectures, and embedded hardware architectures
  • Understanding of hardware interfaces and communication buses such as SPI, I²C, UART, CAN, USB, Ethernet, and PCIe
  • Professional working proficiency in English

What you bring

  • Experience with scripting and automation using Python, Bash, or similar technologies
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills
  • Experience with real‑time, embedded, or distributed systems
  • Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and modern software development practices
  • Familiarity with debugging and performance analysis tools such as gdb and perf
  • Experience using hardware debugging tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, or similar equipment
  • Experience with sensor systems, industrial instrumentation, or monitoring solutions
