Software Engineer II - SWE-II
Summary
Software Engineer II designing greenfield, mission-critical backend systems from day one — high-throughput services, clean APIs (REST/gRPC), and agentic AI workflows — in payments, treasury, regulated healthcare data, or AI vision. Uses AI coding tools daily, owns services end to end including on-call. Irvine-based, remote-friendly, $135k–$165k plus equity.
Compensation: $135k – $165k • 0.05% – 0.15%
Role Summary
Come join us at the ground level. This is greenfield work on the systems the company will run on — you will be designing core architecture, not inheriting someone else's, and the decisions you make now will still be load-bearing years from now. You will make them alongside seasoned engineering leadership that treats coaching and mentoring as part of the job: direct, hands-on collaboration with a lead engineer and a CTO who have shipped production systems at scale and will sharpen your architectural judgment rather than hand you a backlog. We build resilient, mission-critical systems in payments, treasury, and regulated healthcare data, and we move at a velocity that sets us apart. We are hiring a Software Engineer II who pairs strong architectural thinking with real domain depth, and who wants high ownership over core systems from day one. This is an AI-native engineering team. Every engineer ships with modern AI-assisted development tools — specifically Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, and Cursor — in the loop to draft, audit, refactor, and deliver enterprise-grade software, while keeping full command of correctness, security, and edge-case handling. You will work directly with senior engineering leadership on greenfield core systems, own meaningful surface area early, and hold real equity in what you help build.
What Makes This Role Different
High ownership. You own features and services end to end — design, implementation, testing, and production operation — not slices handed down a chain. AI-multiplied throughput. We expect engineers to operate at several times conventional output by using AI tooling well, not to hand off judgment to it. Build agentic systems, not just code with AI. Beyond using AI to ship faster, you design agentic workflows and build the model harness — the evaluation, guardrails, orchestration, and observability that make models dependable in a complex, regulated domain. It is rare, resume-defining experience few teams can offer. Direct access to leadership. You work shoulder-to-shoulder with the lead engineer and the CTO, with a short path from idea to shipped. Greenfield, not maintenance. You will help design core engines rather than inherit legacy debt. Early equity. A meaningful equity stake; we walk you through the full structure during the process.
Key Responsibilities
Architect, implement, and maintain high-throughput backend services and clean API endpoints (REST, gRPC) that handle complex state, concurrency, and high availability. Drive end-to-end technical execution in at least one of our core domains: payments, healthcare data, treasury/financial systems, or AI vision. Integrate Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, and Cursor into your daily workflow to write clean code, automate testing, perform static analysis, and accelerate delivery — with the same review, test, and security-validation gates applied to AI-generated code as to any other code. Break down complex product goals into technical specifications, database schemas, and clean, well-tested codebases in partnership with engineering leadership. Debug complex production edge cases, optimize database queries, and raise system observability and reliability. Share ownership of production health, including participation in on-call rotation for the services you build.
Your First 90 Days
Ship a meaningful production change in your first few weeks. Take primary ownership of at least one service or subsystem in a core domain. Establish an AI-assisted workflow that measurably speeds your delivery without compromising correctness or security.
Core Qualifications
Experience: 2–5 years of professional software engineering experience building and maintaining production systems. Systems mastery: Deep understanding of systems architecture, distributed state, concurrency patterns, database indexing, and clean API design (REST, gRPC). AI tooling fluency: Proven, hands-on use of AI-assisted engineering tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor) to accelerate delivery without sacrificing code correctness or security. Problem-solving: Strong analytical capacity to weigh architectural trade-offs (e.g., latency vs. consistency) and systematically isolate hard bottlenecks. We prioritize problem-solving above all else. Language versatility: Proficiency in modern production languages and runtimes such as Python, TypeScript/Node.js, Go, Rust, or .NET/C#.
Specialized Domain Experience
Payments: transaction processing, reconciliation, and building reliable systems in a payments environment. Healthcare data: secure handling of sensitive health data and building systems in a HIPAA-regulated environment. Treasury / financial systems: banking or financial integrations and real-time transaction and settlement systems. AI vision: computer-vision pipelines, image and signal processing, and real-time model inference. Bonus Points Experience in a regulated industry (payments, healthcare, banking) and with compliance frameworks such as PCI-DSS, HIPAA, or SOC 2. Early-stage or 0-to-1 experience building systems from scratch.
