Software Engineering Manager

Salary: AUD 240000 - 250000 per annum, $250,000 Package +

Hands on Software Engineering Manager | Product Engineering | Platform Modernisation | ~$250,000 + 10% Bonus

As a hands on SEM for one of core data products in the business, you will lead two engineering squads (around 10 engineers) through the evolution of a mature legacy (Java) data platform architecture to a modern Node.js, React and TypeScript stack.

Working alongside Product Managers, Data Engineers and Principal Engineers, you'll shape the future technical architecture, modernise API integration's, simplify complex data flows and help deliver the next generation of AI-enabled product capabilities. This is a highly technical leadership role, working for a very technical Director, so you will need to have a strong full stack appreciation of how to migrate large components of data from one place to the other and how to then present it. You will have needed to work through decisions that include your choice of database, cloud provider, API's, deployment cadence, security and frontend architecture.

This is a genuine opportunity to influence the technical direction of a platform that sits at the heart of a highly successful technology business. It is a hands-on engineering leadership role for someone who enjoys solving complex technical problems as much as building high-performing teams.

In your first few months, you'll map the current and future-state architecture, lead technical discovery, define solution architecture, oversee the migration of APIs and services, and bring clarity to a complex engineering environment. You'll also lead two distinct squads; one focused on maintaining and evolving the existing Java platform, and the other building the future using React, Node.js and TypeScript. And everything in between.

You'll bring:

• Experience leading multiple software engineering teams within a modern product business
• Strong technical background across Java and/or Node.js, React and TypeScript
• Experience modernising large-scale applications and migrating legacy platforms
• Deep understanding of APIs, distributed systems and microservices
• Strong architecture and technical decision-making capability
• Experience partnering closely with Product, Data and Design
• Passion for improving engineering culture, mentoring engineers and raising technical standards
• Experience with AWS, CI/CD and modern engineering practices
