About the Role

We are looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to lead the design and evolution of backend services across the Talview platform. You will solve complex technical problems, contribute hands-on code, and establish engineering standards that help teams deliver reliable systems at scale.

Our backend stack includes Node.js, PostgreSQL, Redis, AWS Lambda, GraphQL, Hasura, and Temporal.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, deploy, and operate scalable backend microservices serving millions of users.
• Lead the technical design of complex services and integrations across multiple teams, making architectural trade-offs around scalability, reliability, security, and maintainability.
• Own multiple critical backend services end-to-end, from architecture and design through implementation, monitoring, incident response, and continuous improvement.
• Define and drive adoption of organization-wide engineering standards for code reviews, testing, observability, and technical documentation.
• Identify technical debt and drive improvements that benefit multiple engineers or teams.
• Take hands-on ownership of complex and critical components, translating architectural decisions into production-ready solutions while guiding engineers through design and implementation.
• Collaborate with Frontend Engineering, QA, Customer Success, and Product teams to turn customer needs into dependable solutions.
• Integrate with APIs, services, and data stores, and contribute to proofs of concept and new product features.

Required Skills and Experience

• 6–7 years of backend development experience, with strong hands-on expertise in Node.js.
• Experience owning complex production services and guiding technical decisions beyond a single feature.
• Strong fundamentals in object-oriented programming, design patterns, and SOLID principles.
• Experience writing unit, integration, and functional tests and improving testing practices.
• Strong working knowledge of distributed systems, microservices architecture, application tuning and profiling, and CI pipelines.
• Proficiency in SQL, preferably PostgreSQL, including data modeling and query optimization.
• Working knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes, with experience operating services in a cloud environment.
• Ability to communicate design choices clearly, mentor engineers, and collaborate across functions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Redis, AWS Lambda, GraphQL, Hasura, or Temporal.
• Experience with SaaS products, customer-facing engineering, or high-availability systems.
• Familiarity with Git, REST client tools, and Agile/Scrum practices.
