Staff Platform Engineer
You will provide technical leadership and ownership of client-facing compute platforms. You will design, operate, and maintain the VMware environment while leading the transition to an OpenStack-backed platform. You will ensure IaaS, backup, and disaster recovery services are secure, resilient, highly automated, and meet RPO/RTO objectives. You will drive automation and observability, create documentation and runbooks, provide training and escalation support, and partner with networking, security, and operations to deliver reliable platform services.
Responsibilities
- Design and maintain the VMware platform
- Lead the transition to an OpenStack-backed platform
- Ensure IaaS, backup, and disaster recovery services are secure resilient and automated
- Set technical direction and standards for virtualization and private cloud platforms
- Mentor and support engineers and administrators
- Participate in on-call and planned change windows as an escalation point
- Define target architecture and tenancy models for OpenStack
- Develop migration and coexistence strategies with risk mitigation and rollback plans
- Partner with networking security and operations teams to align designs with standards
- Own design reliability capacity and lifecycle management of VMware (vSphere ESXi and tooling)
- Establish standards for provisioning configuration patching and performance tuning
- Lead design and initial rollout of OpenStack and integrate core services
- Integrate OpenStack with identity networking backup and observability systems
- Architect and oversee Veeam and Zerto based backup and disaster recovery solutions
- Ensure RPO and RTO objectives are met through policies test restores and DR exercises
- Drive automation of provisioning configuration and day two operations using scripting and infrastructure as code
- Define and implement monitoring logging and alerting for core platform components
- Create and maintain documentation standards runbooks and enablement materials
- Provide training and ongoing support to NOC and operations teams
Requirements
- College diploma or university degree in computer science engineering or related field or equivalent work experience
- Significant hands-on experience with VMware vSphere ESXi and related VMware technologies in production
- Experience designing or operating OpenStack or similar open cloud platforms
- Experience with Veeam Backup and Replication and Zerto or similar disaster recovery solutions
- Experience with storage technologies including SAN and NAS and their integration with virtualization and backup platforms
- Experience deploying and operating Windows and Linux workloads in virtualized and containerized environments
- Hands-on experience with scripting or programming languages for automation
- Familiarity with basic database concepts
- Background in technical support operations or SRE style roles
- Solid understanding of network technologies including VLANs VXLAN NSX routing switching and load balancing
- Strong grasp of virtualization cloud and infrastructure design patterns
- Experience with automation and infrastructure as code tools
- Advanced troubleshooting skills across compute storage and network layers
- Strong analytical and problem solving abilities with high attention to detail
- Ability to explain complex technical concepts in business friendly language
- Effective at prioritizing and executing tasks in high pressure environments
- Strong customer service orientation and willingness to help stakeholders
- Highly self-motivated with a bias toward ownership and outcomes
