Sr. Platform Engineer
Summary
Staff Platform Engineer at Ironsite building and scaling a construction technology platform that processes video data into actionable tools for construction teams. Core technologies include React/TypeScript for frontend, Node.js/PostgreSQL/Redis for backend, and AWS cloud infrastructure.
About Ironsite
Ironsite is building the intelligence layer for the physical world. We design our own wearable hardware, deploy it alongside craft workers, and transform a shift's footage into a next-morning report. Our internal team and purpose-built models label the data overnight and deliver actionable insights to superintendents by 5 AM.
We are accelerating the speed, efficiency, and predictability of construction, especially for complex, mission-critical infrastructure projects, including data centers, LNG facilities, sports stadiums, hospitals, and other large-scale developments, by training AI models on egocentric construction footage and labor productivity data. We are built with a pro-worker philosophy at our core: we believe technology should empower the workforce, not replace it. We're working to give craft workers and project leaders better visibility into what's happening on-site, while creating a system where the reality of construction and the chaos of each day is finally available to the people running the project.
Ironsite is deployed across several of the largest active construction projects in the country. To date, we've captured more than 100,000 hours of construction footage across seven states, now process thousands of hours of site activity every day, and maintain a worker opt-out rate below two percent. This is enabled by a workforce-first architecture that anonymizes devices, captures no audio, and never releases raw video.
Ironsite is backed by leading investors (8VC, South Park Commons, Saga Ventures) and prominent operators across technology and construction, including Eric Schmidt, Jeff Dean, Jeff Rothschild, Mark Leslie, Scott Wu, Eric Glyman, Karim Atiyeh, Russell Kaplan, and others, alongside over a dozen construction industry operators who have joined us as partners in building this.
Longer term, we believe Ironsite is the foundation for what construction becomes in the next decade. We think the systems we're building are the operating system for how the physical world gets built, and will unlock a fundamentally different way of respect for our workforce. One where craft workers are more valued, more visible, and better paid for the skill they bring, and where the industry finally has the intelligence layer that makes autonomous construction possible. Both futures start with the same foundation.
The Role
We're hiring an exceptional Staff Engineer to help build the Ironsite platform
You'll own the technical foundation for the dashboards project leaders open at 5 AM, the labor-management tools superintendents run their entire jobsite on, the mobile experience craft workers carry in their pocket, and the integration layer that connects Ironsite to the software the industry already lives in. This is the work that decides whether Ironsite becomes the operating system for the field or another tool competing for attention.
You'll operate with real ownership over critical initiatives that impact tens of thousands of craft workers and dozens of the largest contractors in the country, and you'll help mentor and grow the engineering team as we scale into what we believe is the most important platform being built in construction today.
What You'll Build
- Labor Management. The tools superintendents will run their entire jobsite on: Time & Attendance, Crew Management, Change Order Management, Progress Tracking & As-Builts, and Labor Planning. This is the daily-driver surface that decides whether Ironsite becomes the system of record for the field, or just another tool competing for attention.
- Craft Worker Mobile Experience. The worker-facing mobile web app that turns Ironsite from something workers wear into something they use daily by helping build profiles, stats, achievements, badges, the rewards marketplace, exportable resumes, and multi-language daily notifications with SMS delivery for workers in the field. This is where our pro-workforce philosophy translates into our product, and where we build the recognition and career-building layer for the trades.
- Integrations & API. The connectors that let Ironsite plug into the existing construction and HR stack, including tools like Procore, Autodesk, Trimble, and the long tail of ERP and payroll systems, and the API infrastructure underneath them. Done right, this is what makes Ironsite the ground-truth layer feeding every other system on a jobsite; done wrong, it's a bottleneck on every deployment.
- Ground Truth Tooling. The internal tools that power our labeling operation and feed the AI team's data engine, including the Tagger Portal, GT dashboards, admin tools, and quality tooling that keep hundreds of subject-matter experts labeling thousands of hours of video every night at a bar high enough for our research team to train and evaluate on. As we scale from thousands of hours per day to hundreds of thousands, these tools become one of Ironsite's core moats.
Technical Challenges You'll Solve
- Every night, our system processes thousands of hours of jobsite video into production reports that superintendents open before the crews arrive on site. That deadline is real, the reports have to be trustworthy, and the underlying model outputs are messy at the scale we operate. You'll help own the data infrastructure and reporting layer that makes this happen without fail.
- Building the integration layer for an industry running on legacy tools. Ironsite has to interoperate with Procore, Autodesk, Trimble, and a long tail of ERP and payroll systems that are decades old and often internally inconsistent. This is designing the architecture that lets Ironsite pull ground-truth data from and push insights back into systems the industry actually uses, while insulating our core platform from the chaos of those interfaces.
- Scaling internal tooling for a labeling operation that never stops. Our labeling team labels thousands of hours of video every night to feed the AI team's training and evaluation pipelines. As the operation grows, the tooling has to keep the workforce fast, the data clean, and the quality bar high enough that our researchers can trust what they're training on.
What We're Looking For
- Deep full-stack expertise, comfortable owning a system end-to-end from the browser to the database and everything in between. You've made real judgment calls on modern frontend (React/TypeScript), backend services (Node.js, PostgreSQL, Redis), and cloud infrastructure (AWS), and you know when each tool is the right one and when it isn't.
- A strong track record with API design, third-party integrations, and real-time data and analytics surfaces, specifically the ability to build systems where correctness, performance, and clarity for downstream teams all matter at the same time.
- Experience shipping web applications at scale, in production, with the kind of reliability construction customers won't tolerate the absence of.
- Systems thinking that spans end-to-end product architecture and cross-team integration. You care as much about the seams between systems as the systems themselves.
- Enough years in the field to have earned strong technical judgment (typically 8+), and enough Staff/Principal-level experience to know how to influence architecture and mentor senior engineers without leaning on authority.
Preferred Qualifications
- 10+ years of engineering experience, with at least 4 spent operating at Staff/Principal level at a company you're proud of.
- Deep experience owning and evolving core platform infrastructure including data pipelines, backend services, developer tooling, or the systems everything else at the company runs on.
- A track record of shipping systems that scaled by orders of magnitude in throughput, users, or data volume, and doing so without over-engineering early or accumulating dead architectural weight late.
- Strong opinions about system design tradeoffs, and the judgment to know when to invest in abstraction vs. when to ship the boring solution that works today.
- A history of raising the bar around you, including mentoring senior engineers, driving technical decisions through influence rather than authority, and making the teams you're on materially better.
- Comfort operating in environments where the right answer isn't obvious yet.
- Genuine excitement about industries that have been underserved by software, and interest in becoming the person who builds the infrastructure the physical world runs on.
