Subcon Quality Senior Engineer
The Subcontractor Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring subcontractor (external manufacturing / OSAT) quality performance meets onsemi requirements for product reliability, compliance, and customer satisfaction.
This role requires strong technical expertise in semiconductor IC backend (assembly, packaging, and test), with the ability to provide hands-on guidance to subcontractors in resolving and preventing quality issues. The engineer will work closely with subcontractors, internal cross-functional teams, Customer Quality Engineers (CQE), and external customers to support NPI, production, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Define and implement subcontractor qualification criteria, quality requirements, and performance expectations
- Act as the technical quality lead for subcontractor development, qualification, and sustaining production
- Provide hands-on technical guidance to subcontractors to resolve yield, reliability, and process-related quality issues
- Monitor subcontractor quality KPIs (e.g., PPM, yield, FPY) and drive continuous improvement initiatives
- Perform APQP phase-gate reviews for NPI, site qualification, transfers, and process/material changes
- Ensure process readiness, risk mitigation, and compliance with quality standards prior to production release
- Review and validate PFMEA, control plans, and process capability to ensure product robustness
- Serve as the primary quality interface between subcontractors, CQE, and customers
- Support and facilitate customer audits and quality reviews at subcontractor sites
- Lead customer issue resolution, including complaint handling and escalation management
- Coordinate timely containment, root cause analysis, and corrective actions for customer-impacting issues
- Lead failure analysis and structured problem solving using 8D, 5-Why, Fishbone, and other methodologies
- Provide on-site support at subcontractor locations for critical quality issues when required
- Drive implementation and effectiveness verification of corrective and preventive actions (CAPA)
- Plan and conduct process, technical, and quality system audits at subcontractor sites
- Ensure compliance with onsemi standards, IATF 16949, and customer requirements
- Drive closure and effectiveness of audit findings and improvement actions
- Deploy and sustain quality tools and methodologies (APQP, SPC, MSA, FMEA) across subcontractor sites
- Drive error-proofing initiatives, defect prevention, and zero-defect mindset
- Promote best practices, lessons learned, and standardized quality methods
- Provide training and guidance to subcontractors on quality systems, tools, and expectations
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Electrical / Electronics / Mechanical / Materials or equivalent)
- Minimum 8–10 years of experience in semiconductor manufacturing
- Strong exposure to IC backend (assembly, packaging, test) and external manufacturing / subcontractor (OSAT) environments
- Proven experience in subcontractor / supplier quality management, NPI / APQP and product qualification, and customer quality interaction and issue resolution
- Experience supporting subcontractor sites across regions is highly preferred
- Strong knowledge of semiconductor backend processes including die attach, wire bond, molding, singulation, and test
- Expertise in quality tools and methodologies including APQP, PFMEA, Control Plan, SPC, MSA, capability analysis, 8D, RCA, and CAPA
- Familiar with quality management systems including IATF 16949 and ISO 9001
- VDA 6.3 audit experience or certification is an advantage
