Substation Control Design Engineer/Designer – (Forest Park, GA)

JOB SUMMARY

The Substation Design Control Engineer/Designer position is required to design protective relay & control schemes utilizing microprocessor-based relay systems in both green and brown field projects. This position is responsible for specifying and ordering material for substation design packages, including stock, shop fabricated, and non-stock material. The position will also transmit drawing packages and supporting specifications using the Transmission Engineering job transmittal program.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Make SAFETY our number one priority using a “Safety First” mentality and leading by example

  • Enforce Quality Assurance guidelines for the preparation of high-quality design packages needed to construct (new or modify existing) substations using CAD-based tools, based on Southern Company design standards

  • Provide guidance on Southern Company Design Standards, procedures, and processes

  • Design protective relay & control schemes utilizing microprocessor-based relay systems in both green and brown field projects

  • Assist in the specification and ordering of material for substation design packages, including stock, shop fabricated, and non-stock material. Transmit drawing packages and supporting specifications using the Transmission Engineering job transmittal program

  • Coordinate and communicate with other departments associated with Substation Design

  • Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company committee members to resolve equipment and material issues

  • Provide support to Substation Construction, Field Services, Project Management and Substation Maintenance

  • Perform site visits for projects, including pre-engineering meetings, pre-construction meetings, and post-job evaluation meetings. Some overnight travel will be required

  • Support Southern Company’s design criteria and standardization effort

  • Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, setting priorities, and using effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals

  • Position will support Southern Company storm restoration efforts

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION (Must meet at least one of the four below):

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred) with 5 years minimum relevant experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology (Electrical preferred) with 5 years minimum relevant experience

  • 4-year Degree (Non-Engineering) with minimum 8 years relevant experience

  • Associate Degree with minimum 15 years relevant design experience

  • No Degree with minimum 18 years of relevant design or utility experience

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience using Autodesk Suite (including AutoCAD Electrical) or higher is preferred
  • Substation protective relay testing experience along with control scheme testing and commissioning experience a strong plus
  • Understanding of substation protection & control scheme operation is preferred.
  • Ability to create Substation Control Design drawings from a single line wiring diagram is preferred
  • Experience in Transmission &/or Distribution Substation Operations for an electric power utility company is preferred
  • Experience in the field of Substation Engineering, Field Services, Switchboard Wiring, Power Delivery, Substation Maintenance, or Substation Construction is preferred
  • Experience working with document management & estimating systems such as Transmission Estimating and Management System (TEAMS), STOMP, MAXIMO, SCST Vault is preferred
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office products is required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Must demonstrate excellent communication skills (oral & written) and the ability to communicate technical issues simply
  • Must be a self-starter and exhibit strong problem-solving skills
  • Must work well in a team environment and must be able to develop and build relationships at all levels
  • Must possess effective time management and organizational skills sufficient to manage multiple projects with various priorities and competing deadlines
  • Must demonstrate a customer focus with a willingness to meet the needs of our customers and solicit feedback
  • Good understanding of utility electric grid operations is preferred
  • Knowledge of basic electrical power system theory is preferred

TRAVEL & WORK LOCATION

  • This position will require some travel (approximately 25%) and be in Metro Atlanta (Forest Park, GA).
  • Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.
