Position Summary:
ATI is seeking a Process Engineering Intern for our Vandergrift Operations for summer 2027. The successful candidate will support engineering and operations teams in a heavy industrial metals manufacturing environment. This internship is designed for students pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related technical field. The intern will assist with process improvement projects, production support, data analysis, troubleshooting, and technical initiatives that improve safety, quality, productivity, and cost performance.
Potential Essential Functions:
The Process Engineer Intern may assist with the following responsibilities:
- Support process engineers with daily production activities, troubleshooting, and technical problem-solving.
- Assist with evaluating manufacturing processes such as cold rolling, annealing, heat treating, pickling, finishing, or inspection.
- Collect, organize, and analyze process data to identify trends, variation, inefficiencies, or opportunities for improvement.
- Support investigations related to product quality, equipment performance, process capability, material flow, or production delays.
- Assist with developing and updating process documentation, work instructions, standard operating procedures, and technical reports.
- Participate in plant trials, process audits, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement projects.
- Evaluate the impact of process parameters on chemical composition, material properties, surface quality, mechanical performance, or product consistency.
- Work with operations, maintenance, quality, metallurgy, and engineering teams to support process improvements and corrective actions.
- Assist with tracking key performance indicators related to yield, productivity, scrap, rework, downtime, and quality.
- Support implementation of process changes, best practices, and safety improvements.
- Follow all safety procedures and environmental requirements while working in office, laboratory, and plant environments.
- Prepare and present project findings, recommendations, and progress updates to technical and management teams.
Work Environment
This position will involve work in both office and heavy industrial manufacturing environments. The intern may spend time in production areas, laboratories, and technical office settings. Personal protective equipment is required in designated areas. The role may involve exposure to noise, heat, moving equipment, chemicals, and other conditions commonly found in a heavy industrial metals manufacturing facility.
Learning Opportunities
The intern will gain hands-on experience in industrial process engineering, metals manufacturing, production support, technical troubleshooting, data analysis, and continuous improvement. This role provides an opportunity to apply chemical engineering and materials science concepts to real-world manufacturing processes and operational challenges.
