Overview

We are designing the grid of the future!

As a Technical Business Development Strategist – Transmission Planning, you will bridge deep transmission planning and power systems expertise with market strategy and business development to help EPE identify, shape, and pursue meaningful opportunities with utilities, transmission owners, and ISO/RTOs.

This is not a traditional sales role. You will bring first-hand technical and industry experience to understand the challenges transmission organizations face, identify where EPE can provide value, and engage utility and ISO/RTO leaders as a credible technical partner. You will work closely with EPE’s Transmission Planning leadership and Business Development team to evaluate markets, research clients, identify the right stakeholders, develop targeted account strategies, and translate technical and regulatory challenges into actionable opportunities and scopes of work.

You will stay connected to evolving engineering practices and industry developments while building relationships with transmission planning engineers, managers, directors, executives, and other key industry stakeholders. Success in this role means helping EPE pursue the right clients, with the right services, at the right time, for the right reasons.

Responsibilities

How you can make an impact:

  • Monitor North American transmission markets, regulatory developments, reliability requirements, regional planning processes, and utility investment trends to identify opportunities aligned with EPE’s Transmission Planning capabilities.
  • Analyze transmission expansion plans, interconnection queues, large-load growth, data center development, generation retirements, renewable integration, and emerging grid challenges to identify client needs and consulting opportunities.
  • Develop data-driven target account lists, market assessments, business development strategies, and growth objectives in collaboration with Transmission Planning leadership and the broader Business Development organization.
  • Engage utility and ISO/RTO engineers, managers, directors, executives, and other stakeholders in technical discussions to understand transmission planning needs, reliability concerns, regulatory drivers, infrastructure priorities, and future study requirements.
  • Communicate EPE’s transmission planning capabilities, including power flow, short-circuit, transient and voltage stability, EMT, interconnection, large-load integration, and advanced transmission studies, to address client technical and business objectives.
  • Identify and develop relationships with key decision-makers, technical leaders, procurement stakeholders, and organizational influencers across planning, operations, engineering, interconnection, asset management, regulatory, and executive functions.
  • Partner with Business Development Managers, Account Managers, Transmission Planning leadership, and technical subject matter experts to develop account strategies, strengthen existing client relationships, pursue new accounts, and expand EPE’s service offerings.
  • Translate client challenges and market intelligence into qualified business opportunities by assessing technical fit, client needs, market demand, competitive positioning, resource requirements, and likelihood of success.
  • Develop preliminary scopes of work, study approaches, technical requirements, deliverables, assumptions, schedules, and resource estimates in collaboration with Transmission Planning leadership and subject matter experts.
  • Prepare technical proposals, scopes of work, presentations, and client-facing materials while contributing to pursuit strategies, competitive differentiators, win themes, and technical messaging.
  • Support RFP reviews and bid/no-bid decisions by evaluating client relationships, technical capabilities, competitive considerations, resource availability, and strategic alignment.
  • Identify emerging consulting opportunities associated with inverter-based resources, data centers, large electronic loads, renewable generation, BESS, system strength, grid-forming technologies, HVDC, FACTS, control interactions, and other evolving transmission challenges.
  • Maintain technical currency in transmission planning methodologies, modeling approaches, reliability standards, emerging technologies, and industry-standard tools such as PSS®E, TARA, PSLF, DSATools, PSCAD, and EMTP-RV; periodically participate in technical studies or strategic initiatives as appropriate.
  • Represent EPE at utility meetings, ISO/RTO events, industry conferences, technical committees, working groups, and forums to strengthen industry relationships, identify client needs, monitor emerging trends, and develop business opportunities.
  • Share market, regulatory, competitive, and technical intelligence with Business Development and Transmission Planning leadership to inform service development, improve proposal strategies, refine market positioning, and guide future business development initiatives.

Qualifications

Bring your passion, here's what’s needed:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 7-10+ years of experience in transmission planning, power systems engineering, utility operations, ISO/RTO planning, or engineering consulting
  • Hands-on experience performing or overseeing transmission planning studies, with a strong understanding of bulk electric system performance and planning processes.
  • Experience working with electric utilities, transmission owners, ISO/RTOs, or other bulk power system organizations.
  • Strong consultative communication, technical writing, and presentation skills, with the ability to engage effectively with engineers, managers, directors, and executives.
  • Knowledge of power flow, contingency analysis, short-circuit, transient stability, voltage stability, interconnection, and other core transmission planning methodologies.
  • Experience developing technical proposals, study plans, engineering recommendations, reports, presentations, and other client-facing deliverables.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to translate complex technical, regulatory, operational, and investment challenges into actionable client strategies and scopes of work.
  • Familiarity with emerging grid challenges involving inverter-based resources, large loads, data centers, renewable generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and system strength.
  • Understanding of electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies and high-fidelity simulation applications involving HVDC, FACTS, power electronics, control interactions, and system stability.
  • Knowledge of NERC reliability standards, FERC requirements, ISO/RTO planning processes, and regional transmission planning practices.
  • Ability to analyze regulatory filings, transmission plans, interconnection activity, capital programs, and industry trends to identify client needs and consulting opportunities.
  • Demonstrated ability to research target accounts, identify key stakeholders, uncover client needs, build trusted relationships, and advance business development opportunities.
  • Ability to collaborate across Business Development and Transmission Planning while independently managing client strategies; willingness to travel as needed.
  • Preferred qualifications include a PE license or advanced degree; experience in major North American planning regions (e.g., ERCOT, MISO, PJM, SERC, IESO, or AECI); proficiency with tools such as PSS®E, TARA, PSLF, DSATools, PSCAD, or EMTP-RV; and established industry relationships or participation in technical committees and working groups.
