Technologist - Cardiovascular (Non-Invasive)
Summary
Performs non-invasive echocardiograms on patients of all ages with complex heart conditions, writes preliminary reports, and assists cardiologists with imaging procedures in a pediatric cardiology program.
Under general supervision, the Technologist – Cardiovascular (Non-Invasive) performs non-invasive echocardiograms (echo) utilizing department protocols/guidelines on fetal (preferred), pediatric, adolescent and adults with known or suspected congenital heart disease of a complex nature. S/he completes preliminary report for Cardiologist using Echo PACs software in a timely manner. S/he is a flexible team-oriented individual with excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills. The incumbent participates in the prioritization of patients in the Cardiology Clinic, inpatients and ED and assists Cardiologists with TEE in the Cath Lab and OR. S/he participates equally in on-call rotation and overtime as dictated by patient demand. S/he participates in Echo QI and Cardiac Program activities. Willing to assist the team in the performance of other duties.
- Assesses patients during patient care and performs all cardiac echo procedures.
- Plans, prioritizes and organizes ultrasound workload, ensuring developmentally appropriate care Assesses and prioritizes referrals for echo examinations.
- Ensures the ALARA (As Low as Reasonably Achievable) principles of imaging are applied to the examination.
- Performs echocardiograms, individualized according to the patient’s need.
- Participates in the training and development of new employees on equipment and procedures applicable to the area of operations, maintaining alignment with the departments and Sidra’s training objectives and plans.
- Assesses learning needs and professional capabilities related to the specialty area and individual staff assigned in that area
- Plans, delivers and evaluates clinical education, grounding strategies in adult education theory and evidence-based practice
- Designs, delivers, assesses, evaluates and continuously improves learning (including e-learning) in line with identified needs and planned outcomes
- Promotes and work collaboratively in a team environment to achieve planned outcomes
- Supports the assessment of clinical competence and audits compliance with Sidra standards of care
- Documents and reports all clinical education activities against policy and compliance standards including progress and potential problems
- Participates in standby and on call staffing for the Cardiology Imaging service, as appropriate for education, training and experience.
- Ensures systems and standards that promote patient safety and safe practices for delivering patient care for the modality are adhered to as directed.
- Performs M-mode, 2-D, 3D, Strain, stress echocardiography as required per protocol.
- Assists Cardiologists, Interventionlists, Surgeon with TTE, TEE and Epicardial echocardiograms.
- Provides ultrasound modality expertise in reference to the ultrasound service,
- Assists in the maintenance and development of the Ultrasound Service.
- Assists in the preparation of departmental and organizational policies, procedures, standards and regulations.
- Ensures compliance with departmental and organizational policies, procedures, standards and regulations.
- Maintains accurate and concise records of all imaging received by the patient using the appropriate systems.
- Maintains a high level of expertise in managing faults/issues effectively to guarantee the safe operation of ultrasound equipment.
- Ensures optimal utilization of resources.
- Implements quality improvement initiatives.
- Participates in competency assessment of students
- Participates in mandatory training.
- Practices continual professional development to ensure maintenance of professional licensure and certifications.
- Monitors and maintains stock levels for consumables.
- Adheres to and ensures compliance with radiation safety, protection and MRI safety policies, ensuring associated codes of practice, and taking appropriate action where non-compliance is evident.

Education | Bachelor’s Degree in cardiovascular technology, heath care (cardiac science) or a related field.
* Candidates applying from the UK must also provide a postgraduate certificate and official academic transcript, in addition to the above requirements, as there is no national Sonography or Cardiovascular registry examination in the UK. |
