UX Designer – Junior
Summary
Junior UX designer contract (placed by Upstaff) with an Ontario government ministry: 100% onsite in Toronto, doing end-to-end UX — user research, journey maps, wireframes, prototypes and user testing — in Figma/Canvas, with WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility, Ontario Design System and Digital Service Standard compliance.
- Create effective, user-friendly, and visually appealing GUI designs based on user interaction and performance.
- Design the overall functionality of digital products to ensure an excellent user experience.
- Take a user-centered design approach and rapidly test and iterate designs based on user-testing results.
- Define and lead UX projects, design workshops, and alignment sessions with stakeholders and business users.
- Manage end-to-end user research, including participant recruiting, interviews, surveys, analysis, and synthesis.
- Conduct user research, interviews, and surveys and translate findings into:
- Sitemaps
- User flows
- User journey/customer journey maps
- Wireframes
- Mockups
- Prototypes
- Facilitate the client's product vision through researching, conceiving, sketching, prototyping, and user-testing experiences.
- Design experiences optimized for a wide range of devices and interfaces.
- Identify design problems and develop elegant, intuitive solutions.
- Make strategic UX and design decisions relating to existing and new product functions and features.
- Gather user feedback and use it to configure and improve existing interfaces.
- Design user interfaces for web and mobile applications, as well as digital displays, publications, media, and other creative materials as required.
- Work within the limitations and appropriate use of web development technologies.
- Consider the emotional aspects of the human experience when designing online programs.
- Collaborate with developers, QA specialists, business stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to achieve project objectives.
- Manage competing priorities while meeting deadlines and maintaining effective client/stakeholder relationships.
- Prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive design documentation, reports, reviews, and assessments.
Requirements
- Relevant experience creating GUI designs based on user interaction and performance.
- Experience as a UX Designer, Interactive Designer, UI Designer, or similar role, designing for web and mobile applications.
- Ability to define and lead UX projects and facilitate design workshops and alignment sessions with stakeholders and business users.
- Experience managing end-to-end user research, from recruiting participants through research synthesis.
- Proficiency with design and prototyping tools.
- Experience with Figma, Canvas, and similar design tools.
- Thorough understanding of the limitations and appropriate use of web development technologies.
- Experience designing online programs with emphasis on the emotional aspects of human experience.
- Experience conducting user research, interviews, and surveys and translating findings into sitemaps, user flows, user journey maps, wireframes, mockups, and prototypes.
- Experience designing overall product functionality and iterating designs based on user-testing.
- Experience designing and delivering wireframes, user stories, user flows, user journeys, mockups, and prototypes optimized for a wide range of devices and interfaces.
- Experience facilitating a client's product vision through research, conceiving, sketching, prototyping, and user-testing.
- Experience identifying design problems and devising elegant and effective solutions.
- Experience making strategic design and UX decisions related to core and new functions/features.
- Experience gathering user feedback and using it to configure existing interfaces.
- Knowledge of accessibility testing.
- Ability to work with the Ontario Design System.
- Knowledge of the Ontario Digital Service Standard.
- Proficiency in designing with accessibility in mind and meeting WCAG 2.1 AA requirements.
- Experience dealing with complex design challenges, particularly legacy systems and nuanced stakeholder/approval relationships.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive documentation, including reports, reviews, and assessments.
- Ability to communicate design concepts and development processes clearly to diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated effectiveness working with cross-functional teams, including developers, QA specialists, and business stakeholders.
- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with team members at different organizational levels.
- Strong track record of meeting deadlines and managing competing priorities.
- Client relationship management experience.
- Prior Ontario Public Service / Public Sector experience.
- Experience working with the Ontario Design System and Digital Service Standard.
- Experience with accessibility testing and WCAG 2.1 AA compliance.
- Experience working with complex legacy applications and systems.
- Experience navigating complex stakeholder groups and approval processes.
- Experience designing for multiple device types, platforms, and interfaces.
- Clearly communicate UX concepts, research findings, design decisions, and recommendations.
- Translate complex technical and user requirements into understandable design solutions.
- Facilitate workshops, stakeholder discussions, and design alignment sessions.
- Collaborate effectively with business users, product teams, developers, QA teams, and other stakeholders.
- Produce professional documentation and design deliverables.
