Discussion

Summary

UX/UI designer at a software services company in Colombo, running user research and designing end-to-end web and mobile products for clients — from wireframes and prototypes to high-fidelity Figma UI, design systems, dev handoff, and WCAG-compliant, AI-assisted workflows. Requires 4+ years' experience and overlap with UK/EU working hours.

Key Responsibilities:

1. User Research and Discovery:
  • Run discovery with stakeholders: requirements workshops, user interviews, competitor and heuristic reviews.
  • Translate business goals and analytics into user problems, personas and journey maps.
  • Define success measures for key user flows.
2. UX Design:
  • Produce information architecture, user flows, wireframes and clickable prototypes for mobile and web products.
  • Design complete flows including edge cases and empty, error and loading states.
  • Iterate designs based on usability testing, analytics and stakeholder feedback.
3. UI / Visual Design:
  • Create high-fidelity UI for web and mobile, following platform guidelines (Apple HIG, Material Design).
  • Design responsive web applications and data-heavy admin / back-office screens (tables, filters, dashboards, forms).
  • Apply client brand guidelines consistently across all touchpoints.
4. Design Systems:
  • Build and maintain Figma component libraries (components, variants, auto layout, design tokens).
  • Document usage guidelines so developers and QA can reuse components consistently.
  • Keep design components aligned with the front-end implementation.
5. Developer Handoff and Delivery:
  • Prepare dev-ready specs (Figma Dev Mode or similar) with measurements, assets and interaction notes, linked to Jira tickets.
  • Take part in sprint ceremonies (refinement, planning, demos) and estimate design effort.
  • Review builds against designs (design QA) and log UI issues with the QA team.
6. Usability and Accessibility:
  • Design to WCAG 2.1 AA (contrast, touch targets, screen-reader labels, dynamic type).
  • Plan and run usability tests and report findings with clear recommendations.
  • Use product analytics and heatmaps to find drop-off points and propose improvements.
  • Use AI tools to speed up research synthesis, ideation, copy drafts and prototyping, and share good practice with the team.
  • Design AI-powered features and agent / chat interfaces, including trust, transparency and fallback states.
7. Collaboration and Communication:
  • Present design rationale and options to clients, PMs and senior management.
  • Work closely with PMs, developers and QA across time zones.
  • Keep design files, decisions and version history organised (Figma, Confluence).
Essential Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Interaction Design, Graphic Design, Product Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer Science, or a related field. Equivalent experience supported by a strong portfolio will be considered.
  • 4+ years of UX/UI design experience for web and mobile digital products.
  • Experience designing complex applications and admin/back-office tools.
  • Proficiency in Figma (Auto Layout, components, variants, prototyping, Dev Mode) and FigJam.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, particularly Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • Familiarity with advanced prototyping tools such as ProtoPie or Framer.
  • Experience with whiteboarding and workshop tools (Miro, FigJam).
  • Knowledge of user research and usability testing tools (Maze, Lyssna, UserTesting, Hotjar).
  • Practical experience using AI throughout the design workflow, including Figma AI/Figma Make, ChatGPT, Claude, Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, and AI prototyping tools such as v0 or Lovable.
  • Understanding of designing AI-powered features, including conversational and agent interfaces, AI transparency, user trust, and fallback/error states.
  • Strong skills in user flows, wireframing, prototyping, and high-fidelity UI design.
  • Solid knowledge of Apple Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) and Material Design.
  • Experience building and maintaining design systems and design tokens.
  • Understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA).
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum teams using Jira and Confluence.
  • Understanding of front-end development constraints and component-based UI frameworks such as React.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills (B2+/C1), including client-facing communication.
  • Availability to work hours overlapping with UK/EU clients and teams.
  • Strong portfolio featuring at least 3 detailed case studies demonstrating problem-solving, research, iterations, and outcomes, rather than only final designs.
  • Portfolio demonstrating practical AI usage in research, ideation, prototyping, or asset creation.
  • At least 2 shipped web and/or mobile products showcased in the portfolio.

Nice to Have
  • Experience working in an agency, outsourcing, or client-services environment.
  • Experience with Sketch.
  • Familiarity with design handoff and documentation tools such as Zeplin or Storybook.
  • Experience creating motion design and micro-interactions using Lottie or After Effects.
  • Knowledge of product analytics tools (GA4, Mixpanel, Amplitude).
  • Basic HTML/CSS knowledge or experience building simple coded prototypes with AI assistance.
  • Previous experience designing eCommerce, SaaS, or fintech products.
  • Awareness of GDPR requirements and secure handling of user data during research.
