Well Service Crew Manager

Location: Waco, TX preferred; other Texas locations considered
Travel: Approximately 75% throughout Texas
Reports To: Director of Operations

The Role

Smith Pump is hiring a Well Service Crew Manager to lead our well service rig crew. This is a working supervisor position. You will spend most of your time on the rig and in the field doing the work alongside a crew of three or more technicians, and the rest of it assigning jobs, coordinating with customers, and building the skills of the people on your crew.

You will hold the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation Pump Installer license that the crew works under. If you do not hold it today but have the field experience to earn it, we will cover the exam and fees.

What You'll Own

Leading The Crew

  • Assign work, set daily and weekly job priorities, and keep the rig productive across a statewide territory
  • Participate in hiring decisions for crew positions
  • Conduct performance reviews and handle performance and conduct issues with support from the Director of Operations
  • Own crew safety practices in the field

Licensed And Technical Work

  • Serve as the license holder for pump installation work performed by the crew
  • Install, pull, and service submersible and vertical turbine pumps, motors, and controls in municipal water and wastewater applications
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose field problems, and coordinate with engineers, pump mechanics, and panel technicians on solutions
  • Perform inspections and preventive maintenance, and document field findings
  • Maintain the rig, tools, and equipment in service-ready condition

Developing Others

  • Take ownership of our apprentice program and continue building it out: structured on-the-job training, skill checkpoints, and a defined path from helper to technician
  • Prepare crew members for TDLR licensing and support them through certification
  • Serve as the technical resource the crew turns to in the field

Required Qualifications

  • Three or more years of pump field service or well service rig experience
  • Experience supervising or leading a field crew
  • Working knowledge of water pumps and mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions, drawings, and equipment documentation
  • Clear written and verbal communication with customers, engineers, and crew

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five or more years in pump field service or rig work
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License
  • TDLR Pump Installer license already held
  • Municipal water and wastewater experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and field reporting software

Physical Demands And Work Environment

Field and rig work in an outdoor environment, in Texas heat and in all weather. Standing, climbing, bending, and working at height for most of the workday. Regular handling of weights and forces of 100 lbs or more. Overnight travel is routine, averaging around 75% of the schedule. Shop work as required between field assignments.
