Winter Maintenance Driver

Purpose of the role

Colas are looking for HGV Cat C (Class 2) drivers, with CPC, to work on a zero-hour contract basis on PAYE on the Area 9 contract in the Midlands as Zero Hour Winter Maintenance drivers.

Location – Bescot, WS1 4NL.

The Winter Maintenance Season will commence on the 1st of October 2026 and will finish on the 1st of May 2027. Drivers must commit to availability every day for the duration of the service. We will pay you a lump sum figure per day of £20 regardless of whether there are any requirements. We will then pay you £16.50 per hour worked. You must be able to work the hours directed by our Duty Supervisor if the weather is of a poor condition.

The hours will vary per week depending on call outs. Decision making for morning and evenings are generally made on a lunchtime however there will be an expectation that you could take a phone call at any time and respond to the callout.

Main Responsibilities

As a Winter Maintenance Driver (Zero hour) your main responsibilities will be to drive a Winter Maintenance Gritting Vehicle for the duration of the winter maintenance season within Area 9. You will be on standby throughout the winter maintenance season, good time keeping is essential. Additionally, you will undertake the gritting of the roads on your allocated route and all the associated activities required to deliver the Winter Service, for example washing down the vehicle and equipment, fuelling up, keeping good records. Committed to working in a team to keep the Area 9 Network safe during the Winter season. You will Ensure all activities are undertaken with due regard for the environment, to prevent pollution, comply with legal and corporate requirements and minimise environmental impact.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidates for this role will have a full UK driving licence with HGV Class 2 (category C) entitlement and a full CPC is essential. A valid Winter Maintenance qualification is desirable but not essential as training will be provided for suitable applicants. City and Guilds qualification will be arranged for mid-October 2023 and the above-mentioned temporary contract will be extended to cover this.

The ability to get to Strensham or Coleshill Depot, within 1 hours’ notice is essential.
