Working Student, Legal (German)

Open 55d posting dated 2 weeks ago

Summary

Working student in Via’s legal team in Berlin, supporting contract reviews, compliance, and process improvements for a global mobility-tech company.

Via is on a mission to create public transportation systems that provide far greater access to jobs, healthcare, and education. Our platform serves as the technology backbone for modern transit networks, transforming antiquated and siloed public transportation systems into smart, data-driven, and efficient digital networks. With hundreds of agency partners around the world, Via is recognized as the leading transportation technology and service provider globally.

As a Working Student, Legal (Legal Trainee or Rechtsreferendar:in) you will be a critical member of our dynamic and global legal team, working closely with a team of highly dedicated lawyers in Europe, Israel, and New York. You will help us grow our business in Europe and continue to launch new projects. Supported by a mentor, you will get to know the multi-layered tasks of an in-house lawyer, as well as gain a unique insight into the legal department at a high-growth scale-up.

For the Legal Trainee (Rechtsreferendar) track, this is a minimum 6-month "Rechtsreferendariat-Station," ideally starting in September 2026. The role is based in Berlin in a hybrid setup.

About the role:

  • Support business-critical contracting:
    • Review and coordinate completion of contracts (e.g. NDAs, SaaS agreements, vendor contracts, lease agreements), ensuring accuracy and flagging key risks
    • Help maintain and organise contract databases and templates

  • Assist with managing key regulatory and compliance matters:
    • Conduct legal and regulatory research across areas relevant to Via's business, including transportation network services, gig economy, insurance, open source data, and data privacy laws
    • Track compliance with GDPR and other data privacy laws through oversight of Data Protection Agreements (DPAs) with vendors and partners
    • Support Via's internal compliance and corporate governance

  • Drive improvements in efficiency and process:
    • Develop a working knowledge of internal databases and systems in order to pull insights from data in making business decisions
    • Develop and implement ways of improving the efficiency of the legal team through ticketing systems, document management and filing systems, and KPI tracking
    • Lead and support the continuous maintenance and improvement of forms, processes, and systems
    • Assist with the development of legal processes to enhance scalability and efficiency
    • Provide administrative support and assist with special projects, as needed

About You:

  • Currently completing your legal study or Rechtsreferendariat (eligible to undertake a station placement with an in-house legal team)
  • Some exposure to or interest in tech, data privacy, or regulatory law; familiarity with GDPR is a plus
  • Comfortable working with internal systems and data — you're able to pull insights from databases to support business decisions
  • A clear and precise communicator, both written and verbal, who can translate complex legal concepts for non-legal stakeholders
  • Organised and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple workstreams at once
  • Proactive and eager to learn — you take initiative and are energised by the variety of an in-house legal role at a fast-moving company
  • Fluent in English and German; additional languages are a plus

What we offer:

  • Becoming part of a company that was awarded for its commitment to social good
  • Salary range: €20 an hour
  • Hybrid work in a lovely office in the heart of Berlin on Chausseestraße, weekly team lunches and shared breakfasts — and a team you should get to know
  • Urban Sports Club membership

There has never been a more exciting time to be on the cutting edge of public mobility. Ready to join the ride?

Via is an equal opportunity employer.
