The Downtown Emergency Service Center (DESC) is a leading non-profit organization based in Seattle, Washington, dedicated to addressing homelessness in the Pacific Northwest. Founded in 1979, DESC operates under the guiding principle that housing is a basic human right. Our mission is to help individuals experiencing homelessness, particularly those struggling with serious mental illnesses and substance use disorders, to achieve their highest potential for health and stability. We provide comprehensive, integrated services that include emergency shelter, permanent supportive housing, health care services, and employment assistance. At DESC, we adhere to the Housing First model, which emphasizes the importance of providing stable housing as a foundational step towards recovery for those facing homelessness and other challenges. Our programs are designed to be client-centered, ensuring that we meet the unique needs of each individual we serve. We operate over 1,100 units of permanent supportive housing, providing a safe space where participants can focus on improving their health and rebuilding their lives. Each year, DESC reaches over 9,000 individuals, delivering vital services and support in a compassionate and innovative manner. Our commitment to research, advocacy, and community engagement positions us as a national leader in the fight against homelessness.
