The story of Excelitas Technologies is a modern tale of transformation, built upon a rich legacy of photonic innovation. While the company was officially established as an independent entity in December 2010, its roots stretch back much further, originating from the opto-electronic foundations laid by three MIT professors who founded EG&G in 1947. For over half a century, EG&G expanded its expertise in light detectors, sensors, and laser technologies. A pivotal moment came in 1999 when EG&G acquired the Analytical Instrumentation division of PerkinElmer, adopting its well-known name and continuing to flourish. The true genesis of the Excelitas we know today occurred when it was spun out of PerkinElmer, backed by the private equity firm Veritas Capital. This move marked the beginning of a new chapter, allowing the company to focus exclusively on its core mission: delivering innovative, market-driven photonic solutions. Since its inception as a standalone company, Excelitas has embarked on an impressive journey of growth, more than tripling its revenue and global workforce. This expansion has been fueled by a dual strategy of organic innovation and strategic acquisitions. The company has selectively integrated other leading-edge technology firms, such as Qioptiq, Lumen Dynamics, REO, Axsun Technologies, and Noblelight, into its portfolio. Each acquisition was carefully chosen to enhance its capabilities and broaden its reach across diverse markets, including life sciences, industrial manufacturing, semiconductor, defense, and aerospace.
