Geospatial Full Stack Architect
Summary
A hands-on architect role designing and building a cloud-native weather/geospatial platform on AWS — React 19 micro-frontends, Spring Boot services on Kubernetes, and MapLibre/WebGL map visualizations delivering real-time weather data at 99.99% availability under FISMA High compliance. The architect sets full-stack and geospatial standards, leads code reviews, and guides technical planning.
The Role:
The Geospatial Full Stack Application Architect will be responsible for the end-to-end design and development of a cloud-native application and its supporting backend services on AWS. The platform delivers radar, satellite, forecast-model, observational, geospatial, and historical weather data to web clients in real time, with a target of 99.99% availability and compliance with FISMA High requirements. This is a hands-on role using React, Spring Boot, Kubernetes, MapLibre, and WebGL. The architect will provide technical leadership, guide planning and code reviews, and establish frontend, backend, data, and geospatial development standards.
Job Responsibilities:
- Lead full-stack, geospatial, application architecture across the web and backend services layers.
- Design and build React 19 micro-frontends using Module Federation.
- Define clear API and data contracts for geospatial and weather information.
- Design the processing and delivery of raster, vector, gridded, point, spatial, and time-series data.
- Set standards for coordinate systems, map projections, spatial accuracy, geometry processing, tiling, and browser rendering.
- Develop REST APIs, BFF services, and domain services running on Kubernetes.
- Design real-time data delivery using WebSockets, server-sent events, and event-driven patterns.
- Design caching, tiling, and delivery approaches that perform well with large weather datasets and browser-based maps.
- Build web-based geospatial visualizations using MapLibre, deck.gl, WebGL, or similar tools.
- Work with Platform Engineering on CI/CD, infrastructure, deployments, observability, availability, disaster recovery, and FISMA High requirements.
- Lead architecture decisions, technical planning, development standards, and code reviews.
Here's What You Need:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Geographic Information Systems, or a related field.
- 6+ years of full-stack engineering experience, including technical leadership on programs of similar size and complexity.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience building microservices, APIs, and Kubernetes-based applications.
- Strong JavaScript or TypeScript experience with a modern web framework; React is preferred.
- Hands-on experience with micro-frontend architecture and Module Federation.
- Hands-on experience developing BFF services, microservices, and REST APIs.
- Strong experience building browser-based geospatial applications, real-time map visualizations, projections, raster and vector data, spatial processing, tiling, and spatial databases.
- Experience with weather-data formats such as GRIB2, netCDF, Zarr, Icechunk or similar scientific formats.
- Proven technical leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Would Be Nice To Have:
- AWS Solutions Architect or Developer certification.
- Experience with MapLibre GL JS, deck.gl, WebGL, GeoTools, JTS, GDAL, Turf.js.
- Spring Boot and Java 25 experience, including virtual threads.
- Experience supporting meteorological, environmental, scientific, or other data-intensive systems.
- Microservices & API Implementation P4 Modern web frameworks (React, Angular, or Vue.js) Framework P4, Geospatial Application Development P4.
