Infrastructure Engineer
Summary
Build and operate multi-cloud foundations (GCP, Azure, AWS) and developer tooling for an internal platform that powers AI agents and external developer services.
The Platform Developer Experience (PDX) studio builds the infrastructure and internal products that power how the internal engineers ship software. Within PDX and Backstage Product Area, the Platform Infrastructure team is building the next generation of cloud and compute foundations that power our internal developer platform and the AI agents running on top of it, and help bring those capabilities to market through Portal, the external developer platform built on Backstage.
About the Team
You'll join the Platform Infrastructure team within the Backstage Product Area. The team owns the cloud foundations, developer tooling and security posture that the rest of Platform, and ultimately all of R&D, depends on. You’ll collaborate closely with experienced engineers (both human and AI-assisted) while operating at real-world scale, with deep observability, strong safety boundaries, and the unique reliability challenges of agentic production systems.
What You Will Do
Design, build, and operate multi-cloud foundations across GCP, Azure and AWS for platforms that engineers, and the developers building on Portal, rely on every day. This includes compute, storage, networking, identity, and the platform primitives that sit underneath.
Take ownership of meaningful slices of the platform end-to-end: from technical design through implementation, rollout, and on-call, with a high bar for reliability, security, and cost-efficiency.
Improve our developer tooling stack (including CI/CD, build systems, deployment, observability) so engineers ship safely and quickly along golden paths.
Build secure-by-default capabilities into the developer platform so that teams building on top of us inherit good outcomes without extra work.
Drive operational excellence by evolving and participating in our incident management, on-call, and postmortem practices. Use AI assistants to accelerate root cause analysis and build automated remediation capabilities into our production systems.
Collaborate with engineers across Platform and the wider R&D org to understand pain points, shape solutions, and deliver changes that move the needle on developer productivity.
Contribute to Backstage and Portal, helping shape how cloud, security, and tooling capabilities reach the broader industry.
Raise the bar on engineering quality through code review, technical design feedback, mentorship of more junior engineers, and pragmatic improvements to how the team works.
Who You Are
You have 5+ years of backend or infrastructure engineering experience, with a track record of shipping and operating production systems at scale.
You have deep experience building and operating cloud infrastructure (GCP, Azure, and/or AWS), using Terraform and Kubernetes to run production systems at scale.
You are proficient in at least one modern language (TypeScript, Java, Go, or Python) and comfortable navigating large, heterogeneous codebases, and environments where AI-generated PRs are common.
You have hands-on experience with modern developer tooling (CI/CD, build systems, deployment patterns, observability) and have a point of view on what makes platform self-service actually work for the engineers using it.
You think in distributed systems: data flows, failure modes, performance, cost, and operational impact are all part of how you reason about a design.
You're familiar with AI and LLM-based systems and curious about how agents and automation can be responsibly applied to infrastructure work, and even better if you've shipped something in this space.
You take ownership of outcomes, not just tasks. You follow problems through to resolution and bring others along with you.
You communicate clearly in writing and in design discussions, and you can navigate trade-offs with engineers, product, and security stakeholders.
You create inclusive environments where diverse perspectives make the work better, and you invest in growing yourself and the engineers around you.
