Lead Microservices & AI Technical Architect

APG Workforce are seeking a Lead Microservices & AI Technical Architect to support a high-profile Federal Government program delivering large-scale digital transformation and modernisation initiatives.

About the Role
This is a senior leadership opportunity (EL2 equivalent) where you will drive architectural direction, influence engineering decisions, and lead the adoption of AI across the full service delivery lifecycle. You’ll play a key role in shaping scalable, secure, and future-ready platforms while uplifting engineering capability across the organisation.

Key Details
  • Start Date: 1st October 2026
  • Contract: 12 months initial + 2 x 12-month extensions
  • Location: ACT (Canberra-based, hybrid working)
  • Hours: Up to 40 hours per week
  • Security Clearance: Must be able to obtain Baseline
Working Environment:
Flexible hybrid model with a nationally distributed team. Collaboration across multiple locations is required, with occasional travel to Canberra or interstate offices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical leadership and architectural authority across cloud-native, microservices, and AI-enabled platforms
  • Guide the design, governance, and evolution of enterprise systems aligned to security and business objectives
  • Lead modern engineering practices including AI-enabled SDLC, DevSecOps, CI/CD, observability, and automated testing
  • Drive technology modernisation, including containerisation, system integration, and scalable platform design
  • Establish reusable engineering patterns to improve resilience, maintainability, and performance
  • Mentor teams and uplift capability through knowledge sharing, governance, and leadership
  • Foster a culture of engineering excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement
Essential Experience
  • Extensive experience across Azure cloud-native, microservices, and event-driven architecture in complex enterprise environments
  • Strong background in AI engineering and enterprise AI delivery, including ML, semantic search, and responsible AI practices
  • Deep expertise in modern software engineering and platform engineering, including DevSecOps and CI/CD
  • Proven track record leading enterprise transformation and technology modernisation initiatives
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement and leadership skills, with the ability to influence at executive level
Desirable Experience
  • Experience with container platforms such as Kubernetes, OpenShift, AKS, EKS or GKE
  • Exposure to SRE, platform engineering, observability, and automation at scale
  • Experience working in Agile environments, leading distributed teams and driving capability uplift
