About the Role

As a Senior Analyst, you'll work at the intersection of data, health service performance and strategic decision-making, helping senior leaders and stakeholders understand what the data is telling us and what it means for the future.

You'll lead complex analysis and reporting across health service activity and performance, with your insights supporting Hospital & Specialist Services, Commissioning and wider stakeholders including Parliament, the Ministry of Health and the media. From responding to Parliamentary Questions, OIA requests and media enquiries through to developing performance frameworks and value-add reporting, your work will have genuine influence.

You'll bring together information from diverse sources, including National Collections, RAPID datasets and district and regional data, to identify trends, test assumptions and uncover meaningful insights. You'll also play a key role in advancing modern analytical practices, including the responsible use of AI and automation across Health New Zealand. This includes identifying opportunities to improve analytical workflows, accelerating insight generation, enhancing reporting quality, and supporting colleagues to adopt AI-enabled tools and practices in a safe, effective and compliant manner.

This is a role for someone who can move confidently between the detail and the bigger picture — combining technical expertise with strong communication, sound judgement and the ability to translate complex information into compelling, evidence-based advice.

About the Team

You'll be part of a collaborative intelligence and analytics environment working across Health New Zealand and with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.

The team plays an important role in providing trusted evidence and insights that support health system planning, performance, accountability and improvement. You'll work alongside experienced analysts and leaders while building strong relationships across the wider health and government sectors.

About you

To succeed in this role, you will bring:

• A relevant tertiary qualification in business analysis, data science, statistics, business insights or a related discipline.
• 7-10 years' experience in intelligence, analytics or similar senior analytical roles within a large organisation.
• Advanced analytical capability and a strong understanding of how data and insights create business and customer value.
• Proven experience manipulating, integrating and analysing complex datasets from multiple sources.
• Advanced knowledge of data visualisation and business intelligence tools, with experience developing and validating dashboards and reports.
• Strong skills in tools such as Power BI, Qlik, SQL and MS Excel. Experience with Python, AI-enabled analytical tools, automation, or advanced analytical techniques would be advantageous.
• Experience translating complex business requirements into practical analytical solutions through interviews, workshops and process analysis.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the confidence to explain and defend evidence-based recommendations to a range of audiences.
• Strong critical thinking and judgement, with the ability to develop options and provide high-quality advice.
• Demonstrated experience applying AI-enabled tools, automation, scripting or other modern analytical techniques to improve analytical workflows, reporting quality, efficiency, insight generation or stakeholder outcomes.
• Ability to critically evaluate AI-generated outputs, ensuring accuracy, transparency, reproducibility, and alignment with organisational governance requirements.
• Experience sharing knowledge, coaching colleagues, or contributing to the uplift of analytical and AI capability across a team or organisation.
• An understanding of the health sector and government environment.
• A commitment to equity and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, with experience putting Te Tiriti into action highly valued.
