Senior Backend Engineer - Credit Card Payments

In this role you will own and shape the payments platform behind iwoca's business card, building high-availability services for authorisation, rewards, and fraud monitoring. You’ll collaborate with product, ledger, and fraud teams to define architecture and service boundaries, bringing new capabilities to production. The role focuses on scaling card payments within scheme rules and regulatory requirements. This is an opportunity to shape a fast-growing fintech platform at the heart of SME financing.

• Own services end-to-end and influence platform architecture with the principal engineer
• Shape service boundaries and integration of authorisation, rewards, and transaction monitoring
• Collaborate with product to decide what to build and bring new services to production
• Scale payments within card scheme rules and regulatory requirements
• Contribute to ledger-related transitions and production readiness
• Develop and test payment systems and edge-case handling across the transaction lifecycle

• Payment systems design and operation in production
• Card payment flows including authorisation and clearing, with transaction tracing
• Backend engineering in at least one object-oriented language
• Distributed systems experience with microservices, REST APIs, and asynchronous messaging
• Database design, ideally PostgreSQL
• AI leverage to scale engineering output with careful validation in production
• Strong written and spoken communication
