Senior Backend Engineer (Git, Shellscript/Java/Python, Docker, Kubernetes)

Summary

Builds and maintains secure, scalable backend services using Java/Python, Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP) in a DevOps-driven environment.

Role Overview:

  • The Backend Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable, secure, and high-performing backend services that power digital products and platforms. This role requires strong expertise in software engineering principles, cloud-native architecture, and modern development practices.

  • The successful candidate will work in an Agile, DevOps-driven environment, collaborating closely with product, engineering, QA, and operations teams to deliver reliable, secure, and maintainable solutions that meet business and user needs.

Key Responsibilities:

Software Development & Engineering

  • Collaborate with Business Analysts (BAs) and Product Managers to refine user stories and translate business requirements into technical solutions.

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable, secure, and high-performance APIs and backend services in cloud-native environments.

  • Build and enhance backend systems with a focus on scalability, reliability, observability, and performance.

  • Implement modern software engineering practices, including Test-Driven Development (TDD), pair programming, continuous integration, and continuous delivery (CI/CD).

  • Conduct code reviews and ensure adherence to coding standards, software craftsmanship principles, and security best practices.

  • Design and maintain technical documentation, including system architecture diagrams, API specifications, and operational runbooks.

  • Ensure solutions comply with government security policies, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.

Quality, Testing & DevOps

  • Collaborate with Quality Assurance (QA) engineers to ensure adequate automated test coverage and timely resolution of defects.

  • Partner with DevOps engineers to automate build, deployment, monitoring, and operational processes.

  • Participate in release planning, deployment activities, and production support where required.

  • Continuously improve development workflows and engineering practices to enhance delivery quality and efficiency.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver end-to-end product features and enhancements.

  • Communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Contribute ideas and recommendations to improve product functionality, system architecture, and engineering processes.

  • Work independently and effectively under pressure, managing priorities to meet project timelines and delivery commitments.

Emerging Technologies

  • Where applicable, contribute to blockchain-based solutions and smart contract development.

  • Evaluate and adopt emerging technologies and engineering practices that enhance platform capabilities and operational efficiency.

Qualifications & Experience:

Education

  • Degree or Diploma in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline.

Technical Skills

Software Development

  • Proficiency in one or more backend programming languages and technologies, including:

    • Java

    • Python

    • Go (Golang)

    • Node.js

    • Shell Scripting

  • Experience with Git and modern source control workflows, such as GitFlow and trunk-based development.

  • Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and backend services.

Cloud & Infrastructure

  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as:

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS)

  • Microsoft Azure

  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP)

  • Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies, including Docker and Kubernetes.

  • Experience implementing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, or equivalent.

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools, such as Terraform or AWS CloudFormation.

Databases & Integration

  • Experience working with relational and NoSQL databases, including:

    • PostgreSQL

    • MySQL

    • MongoDB

    • DynamoDB

    • Redis

  • Familiarity with microservices architecture and event-driven systems.

  • Experience with messaging and streaming technologies such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar platforms is advantageous.

  • Experience using API documentation tools such as Swagger/OpenAPI.

Observability & Operations

  • Experience implementing monitoring, logging, and observability solutions using tools such as:

    • Prometheus

    • OpenTelemetry

    • Grafana

    • ELK Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana)

  • Strong understanding of system reliability, troubleshooting, and production support practices.

Software Engineering Practices

  • Experience working in Agile software delivery environments using frameworks such as Scrum and Kanban.

  • Knowledge of Extreme Programming (XP) practices, including:

    • Test-Driven Development (TDD)

    • Pair Programming

    • Continuous Refactoring

  • Experience with automated testing frameworks such as JUnit, PyTest, Jest, or equivalent.

  • Strong commitment to software craftsmanship principles and the development of clean, maintainable, and efficient code.

  • Solid understanding of secure coding practices and application security fundamentals.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working with government digital services and authentication platforms such as Singpass and Corppass.

  • Experience with API gateways and service mesh technologies, including Kong, Istio, Apigee, or equivalent.

  • Experience with serverless computing platforms such as AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, or Google Cloud Functions.

  • Experience supporting mission-critical, high-availability, or government systems.

  • Exposure to blockchain technologies and smart contract development.
