Senior Infrastructure Engineer

Salary: $180,000 - $200,000 including superannuation

Most experienced infrastructure engineers eventually reach a similar point.

You become very good at your part of the stack, but as environments become more specialised, networking, security, architecture, cloud and delivery increasingly sit with different teams.

You get deeper, but often narrower.

They are looking for a Senior Infrastructure Engineer who can bring strong foundations across enterprise infrastructure and networking, then use that depth to broaden into areas they may not have had exposure to before.

For an engineer who wants to keep progressing without moving away from technical work, that creates a compelling next step.

The organisation is moving from significant technology delivery towards long-term operation.

As infrastructure and platforms transition into run, the business needs stronger internal engineering capability to identify risks early and ensure environments are secure, resilient and supportable.

The environment spans on-premise infrastructure, data-centre capability, virtualisation, enterprise networking and specialist vendor-supported services.

Specialist partners and MSPs play an important role, but technical accountability cannot simply sit with vendors. The organisation needs an experienced engineer capable of forming an independent technical view, challenging vendor designs and assumptions when required and translating infrastructure risk into clear recommendations.

The Opportunity

This is a senior individual contributor role with a technical centre of gravity firmly in core enterprise infrastructure.

You will work across:

• On-premise hosting, data-centre infrastructure and virtualisation
• Enterprise networking, connectivity and segmentation
• Infrastructure configuration, telemetry and technical dependencies
• Backup, recovery, monitoring and infrastructure resilience
• Integration across enterprise platforms and services
• Delivery-to-run assurance and operational readiness
• Technical review and challenge of vendors and managed service partners

The role requires someone who understands infrastructure from hardware through to service and how individual components combine to create secure, reliable and supportable production environments.

You will also gain exposure to IT/OT interfaces, alongside areas including identity, security, Azure, M365 and broader Microsoft technologies. These provide opportunities to broaden your experience rather than areas where you need to arrive as the specialist.

What You'll Bring

You are likely already operating as a senior infrastructure engineer within a complex enterprise or managed services environment.

The strongest foundation will be hands-on experience across on-premise enterprise infrastructure, data-centre and virtualisation environments, combined with meaningful enterprise networking capability and practical accountability from hardware through to service.

You will be comfortable getting underneath configurations and dependencies rather than operating purely at a governance level.

Experience in energy or utilities would be valuable, but it is not essential. Relevant backgrounds may include transport, telecommunications, healthcare, financial services, mining, government or other regulated and high-availability environments where infrastructure failure carries real consequences.

Importantly, you do not need to tick every technical box.

Our client is more interested in genuine infrastructure depth and demonstrated ability to learn quickly than superficial exposure across every platform in the environment.
