Job Description

As a VFX Artist at Ubisoft Montreal, you are responsible for creating and integrating high-quality special effects while respecting the creative direction, technological limitations, and production deadlines.

What you will do (tasks):

  • Review game design documents and artistic direction to understand the project's creative vision and get a global overview of the FSO (Features Sign Off);
  • Research images and reference videos corresponding to the desired effects and validate these references with the Art Direction;
  • Consult with the Graphics Technical Direction to see if the VFX intentions are feasible within the engine and propose alternatives and/or developments (e.g., tools) as needed;
  • Collaborate with the TD to adapt the pipeline to be conducive to VFX production and jointly determine memory and performance budgets;
  • Work in collaboration with programmers to develop tools adapted to VFX needs;
  • Use the tools at your disposal (particle systems, modeling, textures, etc.) to create the special effects desired by the Art Direction and integrate them into the engine;
  • Verify the quality of the effects once imported into the game and make improvements as needed to maximize the gaming experience;
  • Continuously optimize your special effects, taking into account changes in technological limitations throughout the project to ensure the quality of the special effects is maintained throughout the project;
  • Promote game accessibility by adapting special effects based on game design feedback before, during, and after the creation of the effects;
  • Fix "bugs" reported by testers or other departments to eliminate encountered issues;
  • Be attentive to other departments to help them integrate special effects by providing support, reference documents, etc.;
  • Perform any other related tasks.

Qualifications

  • Originality and resourcefulness in finding solutions
  • Knowledge of and interest in programming languages is an asset (e.g., Max Script)
  • Knowledge of a game editor (e.g., Unreal)
  • Knowledge of compositing software (e.g., After Effects, Illustrator, Houdini, Toxik, etc.)

Education:

  • AEC in game-oriented modeling, bachelor's degree in special effects/cinema, or any other equivalent training.

Relevant experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in creating special effects for video games, including the design, integration, and optimization of real-time effects in a game engine.
