Staff Software Engineer, Backend - Platform (Payment Rails)

You will own the architecture, technical strategy, and roadmap for Payment Rails. You will design APIs, orchestration layers, and integrations that consolidate fragmented payment flows into a cohesive multi-tenant platform. You will build and scale fault-tolerant distributed systems with strong observability and clear SLOs, drive AI-first engineering workflows, partner with Product, Risk, Compliance, and Operations to translate ambiguous requirements into safe technical solutions, lead high-stakes scaling initiatives, and mentor other engineers on design and coding standards.

Responsibilities

• Own technical strategy, architecture, and roadmap for Payment Rails
• Design APIs, orchestration layers, and integrations for a multi-tenant payments platform
• Build and scale fault-tolerant distributed systems that process high-volume payment traffic
• Design for fault isolation, graceful degradation, observability, and SLOs
• Drive an AI-first approach to engineering workflows
• Partner with Product, Risk, Compliance, and Operations to translate business requirements
• Lead scaling initiatives and define technical direction for money movement
• Establish paved roads, design patterns, and best practices to raise engineering quality
• Mentor and train other team members on design techniques and coding standards

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering
• Experience building payment systems, financial infrastructure, or high-volume transactional systems
• Proven experience designing and building fault-tolerant, highly reliable distributed systems at scale
• Platform-builder mindset with experience consolidating fragmented services into reusable platforms
• Experience owning production reliability, leading high-severity incident response, and driving systemic improvements
• History of influencing across teams and driving consensus on high-impact technical decisions
• Experience responsibly using generative AI tools and copilots in engineering workflows
