The Opportunity We are seeking an experienced Technical Business Analyst – Data to support the delivery of technology and data initiatives within a large, complex enterprise environment.
This role sits at the intersection of business analysis, systems and data.
You will work directly with business stakeholders to understand requirements while also being comfortable getting hands-on technically to investigate source systems, interrogate data and validate how requirements can be delivered.
This is suited to someone who is naturally curious, technically capable and self-sufficient. You will be expected to investigate problems rather than simply document them and pass them to another team.
Key Responsibilities
You are not a traditional process-focused Business Analyst.
You are comfortable getting into systems and data yourself. When a stakeholder raises a problem, your first instinct is to investigate it, understand what the data is telling you and work through how the underlying systems operate.
You can write SQL, understand technical conversations and work effectively with developers and engineers, but you can also sit with business stakeholders, ask the right questions and turn ambiguity into clear requirements.
You are proactive and comfortable chasing down the information, system access and people you need to get the job done.
This is not a Power BI/report development role.

Key Responsibilities
- Engage with business and technical stakeholders to understand and clarify requirements.
- Write and execute SQL queries as part of day-to-day analysis.
- Investigate data directly across source systems.
- Identify data relationships, business rules, dependencies and data quality issues.
- Trace information across source systems, integrations and downstream platforms.
- Independently identify system owners and obtain the access and information required to progress analysis.
- Undertake data profiling, mapping, reconciliation and validation.
- Translate business problems into clear functional, technical and data requirements.
- Develop requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, data mappings and supporting technical documentation.
- Work closely with developers, data engineers, architects, technical SMEs and business stakeholders.
- Understand integrations, APIs and data flows across complex technology environments.
- Use AI tools appropriately to assist with requirements clarification, investigation, analysis and documentation.
- Support solution design, testing and validation activities.
- Investigate discrepancies and challenge assumptions where business requirements do not align with underlying system or data behaviour.
- Support delivery from initial discovery and requirements through to implementation.
- Demonstrated experience as a Technical Business Analyst, Data Business Analyst, Technical Data Analyst or similar.
- Strong hands-on SQL capability, with experience writing and executing queries regularly.
- Experience independently interrogating databases and source systems.
- Strong understanding of data structures, databases and data relationships.
- Experience working with APIs, integrations and data flows.
- Some coding or scripting capability, or demonstrated ability to work comfortably with code.
- Strong requirements elicitation and analysis capability.
- Ability to translate between technical teams and business stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving and investigative skills.
- Experience working within complex enterprise technology environments.
- Practical understanding of how AI tools can support modern business analysis.
- Energy, utilities, critical infrastructure or other complex/regulated industry experience will be highly regarded.
