SUMMARY The Mechanical Design Engineer will support station and industry activities related to system and component design and licensing. The Mechanical Design Engineer will develop design changes, formal calculations, and engineering evaluations to either address emergent technical plant issues or improve plant equipment on both safety and non-safety related plant systems. In addition, the Mechanical Design Engineer will support regulatory related activities (e.g. operability & reportability reviews) and act as the technical conscience of the station to maintain the design basis of the plant. Proficient technical writing skills are essential.

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, (preferably) Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Civil or Nuclear Engineering. (Required)

Master’s degree in in technical discipline, (preferably) Mathematics, Physical Science, or Engineering Technology is the equivalent of 1 year experience. (Preferred)

EXPERIENCE

• 10 Years + engineering experience; (8 years nuclear design related engineering experience).

STP experience preferred

LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS

• Professional Engineer licensure in the State of Texas (preferred)

CONSULTING ENGINEER (STATION EXPERT):

Demonstrates extensive station knowledge of systems, processes or programs that are critical to the success of the station and assumes a leadership role in area of expertise.

• Develop engineering changes which improve the reliability and/or performance of systems, structures, and components

Functions as a recognized station authority in their area of expertise

• Develops operational recommendations in specialized area that are critical to the success of the station; recommendations are consistently recognized and accepted by management.

Demonstrates three years’ experience in at least 4 of the following technical areas:

knowledge regarding mechanical system and equipment design for both safety and non-safety related systems and equipment

experience with power plant heat balances

experience with power plant piping specification, design, and construction to codes ASME Section III and ANSI B31.1

production of engineered specifications for mechanical heat exchangers

production of engineering calculations for piping hydraulics

qualification to engineering support personnel requirements for modifications and calculations

ability to develop plant or system models using industry standards and computer codes to perform hydraulic analyses

steam turbine and steam turbine auxiliaries experience

motor operated valve selection, design, qualification, and testing in accordance with industry standards and Generic Letters 89-10 and 96-05.

fire protection safe shutdown analysis for nuclear power plants in accordance with Branch Technical Position 9.5.1 of NUREG 0800, and in accordance with 10CFR50 Appendix R

ENGINEERING INVESTIGATION AND CORRECTIVE ACTION:

Prepares/reviews complex safety evaluations and significant hazards review for plant repairs and conditions.

• Prepares/reviews non-conforming component disposition. Evaluates the extent of the condition and its effect on the component's ability to perform the required design function, including complex issues.

• Prepares/reviews investigations to significant condition reports for apparent or root cause and generate recommendations for corrective actions.

• Prepares/reviews/approves engineering documentation (e.g.: calculations, specifications, analysis, drawings, evaluations, etc.).

• Reviews and evaluates industry documentation and event reports for relevant application to STP, and identify appropriate corrective actions.

ENGINEERING OPERATIONS COORDINATION:

Manages the interface with other departments and regulatory agencies by leading meetings and discussions to provide specific information and analysis to questions/problems.

• Prepares/manages schedule and budget activities on a project level.

• Performs duties of the Section Supervisor as delegated.

• Provides Management level reports on specific tasks.

• Prepares/reviews reportability and operability reviews of station problems/events; evaluate regulatory requirements for reportability and submit written recommendations to Management.

• Provides mentoring and training to co-workers.

CONSULTING ENGINEER (STATION EXPERT):

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

• Accept ERO position as needed.

• Accept outage position as needed.

SPECIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to obtain and maintain unescorted access.

• Demonstrate expertise in a particular design engineering area.

• Special skills and knowledge, as appropriate, for the area of expertise and the work group assignment.

• Completed qualification record in the area of expertise.

• Internal individual must be recommended by their supervisor and manager to the management selection committee and approved by the VP over Engineering.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Overtime and alternate work schedules as needed.

• Subject to callouts twenty-four hours per day seven days per week.

• Normal office environment with frequent field inspections in a plant environment and in all kinds of weather conditions. May require working outdoors and at night.

• Travel may be required.

• Required to carry pager/phone.
