Staff Engineer – FPGA Systems Architecture
Summary
Enclustra, a Zurich-based maker of FPGA modules, IP, and engineering services, is hiring a Staff Engineer to lead architecture of complex FPGA/SoC-based systems spanning hardware, firmware, and embedded software. The role defines system architectures, drives trade-off analyses, mentors engineers, and supports customer solution definition.

Staff Engineer – FPGA Systems Architecture
Responsibilities
- Lead the definition and architecture of complex FPGA-based systems, spanning hardware, firmware, and embedded software domains
- Drive system-level design from requirements capture through architecture, implementation, and prototype delivery, aligned with customer and product needs
- Define scalable, high-performance architectures for FPGA/SoC modules and end-to-end solutions
- Act as technical authority for cross-disciplinary engineering teams (hardware, firmware, software)
- Collaborate with customers and internal stakeholders to translate application requirements into robust system architectures
- Guide trade-off analyses (performance, cost, power, timing, reliability) for FPGA-based solutions
- Ensure system integration across high-speed interfaces, embedded processing, and digital signal processing pipelines
- Contribute to and review system specifications, design documentation, and verification strategies
- Support the development of reusable architectures and design methodologies across projects
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to senior engineers and project teams
- Participate in pre-sales and solution definition activities, helping shape proposals and customer engagements
- Drive continuous improvement of engineering processes, tools, and architectural best practices
Requirements
Technical Expertise
- Strong background in FPGA-based solution architecture, including SoC/MPSoC platforms and heterogeneous systems
- Proven experience across the full development lifecycle: specification → design → implementation → validation → production
- Deep understanding of:
- High-speed digital design and interfaces (e.g., PCIe, Ethernet, DDR, SerDes)
- Embedded systems and real-time processing
- Digital signal processing and/or data acquisition systems
- Experience with HDL (VHDL/Verilog/SystemVerilog) and system-level modeling tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink or similar)
- Familiarity with FPGA vendor ecosystems (e.g., AMD/Xilinx, Intel) and toolchains
- Knowledge of system integration challenges across hardware, firmware, and software stacks
Architecture & Leadership
- Demonstrated ability to define and communicate complex system architectures
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a system-level mindset
- Experience leading technical teams or acting as a principal/staff-level individual contributor
- Ability to influence technical direction across projects and teams
Domain Knowledge
- Knowledge of and experience with functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, DO-254, DO-178B/C
- Experience in regulated or high-reliability industries (e.g., industrial, medical, aerospace, communications)
- Familiarity with verification, validation, and compliance processes
General Qualifications
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field (Master’s or PhD preferred)
- Several years of experience in system architecture or senior engineering roles
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interface with customers and cross-functional teams
- Fluent in English
